Tough at First, Easier with Time – Just Like Marketing

Let’s talk about habits...

Every morning, I start my day with a cold shower. It’s not glamorous. It’s definitely not fun at the time. But over the weeks and months, it’s become something I don’t think twice about. It sets the tone, clears my head, and gives me a wee sense of achievement before I’ve even had my coffee.

Marketing your own business is a bit like that. It can feel uncomfortable and unfamiliar at first, especially if you’re not sure what to say or where to start. But, like any habit, it gets easier with time.

Science tells us that habits form through repetition—each time you complete an action, it strengthens a neural pathway in the brain, making the behaviour feel more natural over time. With consistency, what once felt like a chore can become second nature. And many habits, like regular self-promotion or content creation, can bring long-term benefits that far outweigh the initial discomfort.

Whether it’s posting on social media, emailing your customers, or just putting yourself out there a bit more, the key is consistency. Show up regularly, even if you don’t feel 100% ready. Because that’s how you build confidence—and results.

At Scene & Herd, I’m no longer doing the PR and marketing for businesses. Instead, I’m working alongside them, as a coach and mentor, to help them build the skills and confidence to do it themselves. It’s not about big budgets or slick campaigns. It’s about learning the habits that help you connect with your audience, tell your story, and grow your rural business on your own terms.

So if you need a hand getting started—or sticking with it—I’m here. Drop me a reply.

And in the meantime, maybe try a cold shower...you might surprise yourself!
